There's no accounting for taste! You've rated some trifles as very high: Plath's Bell Jar, Atwood's A Handmaiden's Tail and Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. You've dissed some world renowned fantasy classics: Dune and LOTR. You characterized several of the books you dissed as boring or repetitive, and yet you've put The Iliad in the second category from the top: Talk about repetitive! Battle, battle, battle! Slaying, slaying, slaying! Talk about boring! Finally, it's interesting to me that you despise Dickens so much. Why have three of his works, since you view them all pretty much the same and lacking value? And as almost a separate genre, A Tale of Two Cities has to be among the earliest historical fiction novels out there; and it's a great read too!

I enjoy reading books too! Although I am not satisfied with the translated editions, I am not proficient enough to read English-edition books on my own. With the help of the web extension Immersive Translate, I can grasp the basic meaning of the passages. I hope I can get closer to these intriguing books. If you're keen on Arabic, consider using effective tools such as DeepL and Immersive Translate to help you grasp the essence.

I so agree with the point that sometimes watching a movie adaptation can help you understand the book better - it’s exactly what happened to me with Pride and Prejudice. Watching the movie and brushing shoulders with the fandom really helped me appreciate the book in a way that I couldn’t before!

As an avid "The Road" hater, I implore you not to put yourself through the hell that that book is. There's no proper punctuation, you never know who's talking, and it's just such a boring book; it's constantly repeating scenes not to mention there are no true transitions between any scene it's all just fade to black and boom we're at a different place. How did we get here? no one knows! Not to mention the characters are just so unlikable, don't even get me started on how much the little boy irks me in this book. He's constantly being like "Papa I'm so scared", "Can we leave Papa", "Papa this" and "Papa that" and I know this sounds cruel but the boy is already 12 in a post-apocalyptic world, you'd think he'd toughen up by now. The only part of the writing that I did enjoy was the summary, possibly the only part that was written well but don't let it fool you like it fooled me. I would go into more detail on why this book is horrid but that would spoil it in case you want to read this horrendous waste of a tree.

So I was explaining the intrinsic beauty of an orange to my brother; how it is so wonderful that you can show someone love by sharing a slice or peeling one for them. He ponders this for a bit and then turns to me. Looks me in the eye and says, in all seriousness, “But what if I peel the orange… and give them the PEEL… and then eat the entire orange in front of them?” And I wonder why I bother trying.

The book banning/Burning of documents, literature, and materials in general is not a good idea, however when one of those Items demands that the reader go out and do harm to another person, and is not fictional, that's the issue. Mein Kompf should not be easily available in any printing other than an academic version that breaks down the flaws of logic, fallacies, and damages, place the bad in the proper context and it becomes even more embarrassing to have read it and not understand why it was bad. Not every idea is a good idea. not every book is a good book. We have to accept that. We need to move away from giving into the "so much for the tolerant left" bait and understand, that we CANNOT tolerate intolerance. Read that last line as many times as you need to understand, they claim to be fighting for their lives, but we in the margins actually are.

My ex lived by the laws of this book and he was a sad, insecure person who wanted power. He didn’t value human connections. He viewed people as pawn to get what he wanted. There was no love in his family as a child and he really just needed a hug and a solid mentor. 11 years later I’m still working through the trauma that miserable guy brought to my life with the help of this book. If anyone recommends it, it is absolutely a red flag 🚩

Did not finish is just as valid as I'll re-read this book till my diyin day. The point is that you're enjoying what you're reading, not that you've checked off some social status box.

while I agree with your argument about reading vs being a reader, being a reader is also a way to virtuesignal that you're smarter than others, especially in academic and scholarly circles.
